After the Montecito Debris Flow, I thought of a way to use some of the excess rocks and boulders available in Santa Barbara. Natural sandstone low wall provides a place for neighbors to sit and chat while out on their dog walks. The drought-tolerant plants require only drip irrigation and replace a lawn and chain link fencing. The long narrow driveway doubles as a bocce ball court. The vertical plantings along the driveway is broken up with artful laser cut panels ensure that every space on this small lot is useable. The landscape design was mine and Ashley Farrell Landscape Design installed for me. It was awarded America's Best Front Yard by Better Homes and Gardens in October 2020. It was Awarded A Santa Barbara Beautiful Award 2019 for Green Residential Home - Small Lot. The WaterWise Garden Recognition Contest celebrates and recognizes beautiful, water efficient residential gardens throughout Santa Barbara County. In July 2020, the Poole-Hickey family was awarded as the winner of the City of Santa Barbara and the countywide grand prize winner for their beautiful garden featuring water wise plants that attract native pollinators, a rain barrel to collect rainwater, and downspouts to water the yard.
